Final forty declared for £1million Grand National | Grand National 2014

There were just eight horses withdrawn at the five-day declaration stage for Saturday’s Aintree Grand National. All of the major contenders have stood their ground with Tidal Bay topping the weights for Paul Nicholls.

The eight to be removed were Roi Du Mee, Katenko, Bog Warrior, Mossey Joe, Godsmejudge, Same Difference, Goulanes and Sunnyhillboy. The most significant of those was Sunnyhillboy who was just touched off by Neptune Collonges in the final stride in 2012. Scottish National winner Godsmejudge had been a doubt since pulling up last time out and Alan King will rely on the grey Walkon.

The veteran Tidal Bay carries 11-10 and will be attempting to become the first successful top weight since Red Rum carried 12 stone to victory in 1974. The last 13-year-old to win the race was Sergeant Murphy back in 1923.
