Rocky Creek aimed at Aintree after Argento defeat | Grand National 2014

Trainer Paul Nicholls finally ended his much-publicised quest for a Grand National winner when Neptune Collonges won the race in 2012. Remarkably, the grey was his 53rd runner in the race.

Last year his hopes of a second National were dashed when injury prevented Tidal Bay from taking part but the veteran is on course for this year’s renewal. After Rocky Creek finished a leg-weary second in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham recently, he too has been pencilled in for the Grand National on April 5th.

The eight-year-old is very highly regarded by Nicholls and he deliberately avoided the Cheltenham festival with him last season. He had won three good novice events including the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot but Nicholls did not want to subject him to a hard race like the RSA Chase. By the time he ran at Aintree he was past his best for the season and could finish only a remote third behind Dynaste.  Read more here
